Japan is the world's third largest economy and ranks no. 2 in the eCommerce market in the Asia-Pacific region.

Amazon in Japan has the largest share of the eCommerce pie with 20.2%. With numbers like these, growing your eCommerce business to Amazon Japan should be a no-brainer. However, you cannot just enter the market blindly.

An essential part of running your business is to know your market. Japan, being a country of high culture, you definitely need to research before diving in. Here are two things you should keep in mind.

Don't push your current product

This is especially important for those already selling and earning a profit with their e-business. Your product might be excellent in the market you're currently in but you need to ask yourself if that product translates the same way in Japan. A couple of questions you should ask yourself are:

  • Is this product filling a void in the market?
  • Is there are a working understanding of what the product is?
  • Is this a product people want or will potentially want?

Bottom line is, you need to know if there is an audience that will buy what you have to sell. If the answer to all the above questions is no, you might need to reconsider.

Identify your competitors

So, you're in luck, you find out there actually is a market for your product. The next step is to identify your competitors. You need to identify direct and indirect competitors you'll be facing.

Is the competition more intense than you're used to? Is it easier? Is this a product that more sellers will potentially explore? Once you have figured out the answers to these fundamental questions, you can decide if Japan is the right move with your products

If you're thinking about selling on Amazon Japan, come meet with Nick Katz also known as “The Japan Guy” at the upcoming Global Sources Summit in April.
