Guangdong province owes its status as China's largest production base for power supplies to one of its major cities, Dongguan. This industrial city, once called the world's factory as it churned out clothes, toys and shoes, suffered a major setback from the 2008 financial crisis. In the years since, Dongguan has not only regained its footing but also transformed itself into a major base for electronics. It is one of the designated areas making up the Greater Bay Area, China's science and technology innovation corridor

In the power supply sector, there are nearly a thousand manufacturers in Dongguan, mainly in the towns of Tangxia, Liaobu, Qingxi and Changping. More than two thirds are homegrown enterprises, operating on a small or medium scale. Joining this already huge pool is a host of tier-one industry players such as Delta Electronics, Flex and Acbel.

Delta Electronics built the world's biggest production base for high-power power supplies in Dongguan in 2006. Flex has recently invested $44.11 million in a new factory in Dalingshan town. Scheduled to start operating on a mass scale in 2021, this plant has a total area of 44,689sqm and will realize a total annual production value of up to $147 million. Flex has 19 facilities in China. Acbel operates facilities in Tangxia's Hong Yeh Industrial District.

Other major suppliers in Dongguan include Duracell and Phihong. The latter's factory is in the Silver Lake Industrial Area in Qingxi. It is one of the company's six facilities in China, which have nearly 140,000sqm total manufacturing space.

Dongguan Shilong Fuhua, a national high- and new-technology enterprise with the UE Electronic brand, is located in the Fuhua Electronic Industrial Park in Shilong town. Amperex established its first factory in Dongguan. Also a city denizen is Yingju, which owns a 65,000sqm production base.

Dongguan-based manufacturers offer a comprehensive range of power solutions, including AC/DC adapters and switching power supplies for entry-level, midrange and high-end markets. Batteries and battery packs are also part of most companies' product selections.

To compete for attention in Dongguan's highly diversified sourcing market, Chinese suppliers continue to pursue manufacturing technology upgrades, acquiring more sophisticated production and testing equipment. This is to broaden their in-house capability for advanced customization.

To ensure a high level of quality, Chinese manufacturers of power supplies generally use chips from foreign companies. Other components and materials, including passive componentsPCBs and cases, usually come from domestic sources.

Realm of power

The three main production bases for power supplies in China are in the Pearl River Delta, Yangzte River Delta and the Bohai Bay Rim Economic Region. The key cities in the first include Dongguan, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Foshan, those in the Yangtze River Delta Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Changzhou, and in the third Beijing and Tianjin. Others are in Wuhan, Xi'an and Chengdu.

Over 20,000 suppliers of power supplies from home and abroad gather in Guangdong, attracted by its comprehensive supply chain and preferential economic policies.

Meanwell, Mornsun, Kulkee and Huntkey are some of the bigger manufacturers in the province. Of the top 10 suppliers of AC/DC adapters in China, nine are in Guangdong. They are Kulkee, Huntkey, Delta, Flex, Pisen, Ugreen, Ten Pao, Moso and Yingju, according to portal Chinapp, which ranks top brands in China.

Chinese companies cater to a range of applications, including consumer and mobile electronics, communications and medical products, electric vehicles and power storage. Their power supplies meet CE, GS, PSE and TÜV standards, and are RoHS-compliant and UL-listed.

The aggregate output of Chinese and foreign companies in Guangdong represents more than 50 percent of China's shipments of power supplies, according to suppliers interviewed by Global Sources Electronic Components. This share is expected to rise further in the coming years as more manufacturers flock to the province, further consolidating its hub standing.

China's power supply industry's total market scale reached $37.8 billion in 2020, showing steady growth from $28.2 billion in 2015, according to Chinabgao.

As the pandemic continues, most Guangdong-based companies interviewed remain optimistic about the future. They are predicting sales will increase by more than 10 percent annually from 2021, driven by trends for 5G, cloud computing, data centers, Internet of Things, newenergy vehicles and clean energy technologies. These suppliers are also banking on export recovery, anticipating a five to 10 percent increase in 2021.
