Like homes, cars have carpets, nooks and crannies exposed to dirt, dust, pet dander and spills. Not kept clean, they can be a breeding ground for mold and bacteria as well as harbor viruses. In a study done by Aston University researchers involving five used cars and two toilet seats, the amount of bacteria found in the vehicles was equal to or exceeded that found on the toilet seats, as reported by DW. The highest concentrations were in the trunk, driver’s seat, gearstick, backseat and dashboard. Steering wheels had the least – likely because of increased use of hand sanitizers during the pandemic.
The way to keep cars spotless and germ-free is to do regular and deep – not just surface – cleaning. Because with every ride and passenger, dirt and a host of contaminants, including aerosol particles from talking, sneezing and coughing, get into the interior.
We featured car care products in another post, but our focus is on car vacuum cleaners this time. So, what are the best car vacuums on the market? The choices are numerous, depending on need based on size and weight, corded or plug-in and cordless or battery-operated, motor and suction power, dust collection, noise level and filter. There are also dry and wet-and-dry options.
Hand or stick vacuums are ideal for cars because they are light, small and often cord-free for easy maneuverability. The difference lies in battery power and how long it will run before requiring a recharge. For corded units that plug into the mains or the cigarette lighter socket, cable length is important. AC units can use an extension cord for longer reach.
Wet-and-dry vacuums are usually bigger than handhelds, are more powerful and offer versatility in dealing with liquid messes, especially for seat and floor care. Shop vacs have the most suction power but are too large to fit inside vehicles. But both types can compensate for their size with a long hose and an assortment of attachments that can reach into crevices and tight spaces such as under the seats and around the pedals.
Depending on the specs, car vacuums that run on rechargeable batteries or plug into the mains can also handle cleaning tasks in homes.
