Crystalline & Thin-film Technologies in Solar Cells

Crystalline silicon PV cells remain the most commonly used in solar panels, while advancements in thin-film variants, touted as the next-generation technology, are gaining market attention. The latter is expected to have a share of more than 66 percent of the projected $264 billion global solar cell market by 2030, according to Sohu News.

In China, both the largest solar energy producer and the leader in this supply chain, large manufacturers have been focusing their efforts on thin-film solar cells, in particular the CIGS type. They include Sun Harmonics, Maodi and Sinoltech, which respectively accounted for 26, 18 and 16 percent of the Chinese CIGS market in 2021, according to Sohu News.

Polycrystalline solar cells remain the mainstream, but this will change as more monocrystalline units are expected to be released in the coming years. The current selection has a conversion efficiency ranging from 17.5 to 23.5 percent and is available in sizes of 156x156mm, 157x157mm, 158x158mm, 166x166mm, 182x182mm and 210x210mm.

Most Chinese manufacturers emphasize meeting specific buyer requirements and offer OEM and ODM services.

All materials used in China’s solar cell manufacturing are sourced domestically. After a sharp drop in 2022, their costs have stabilized and kept product prices unchanged. This trend is expected to persist in the months ahead.
